So how are Performancelleyns bred?

They are pure Lleyn sheep but bred for maximum performance, looking to increase the profitability of the commercial sheep farmer’s flock.

If you look at the graph, supplied by Signet Breeding Services, our flock index average is in blue. As you can see, our performance has outstripped the recorded breed average dramatically, which is in red.

The graph has levelled in the last year. This is due to the introduction of the N Z Tefrom into the Signet Lleyn evaluation, to produce the ProlleyNZ. Although the Tefroms have performance figures, they were not created by the same analysis system.

So, they are designated an index below the breed average.This meant they were designated an initial index considerably below the breed average. It is a testament to their quality that the flock figures were not depressed further.

If you exclude the effect of the inclusion of the three sires (the Tefroms, the New Zealand composite sheep), without historical figures, into the evaluation, our graph would have carried on at the same trajectory as before.

We started recording the Performancelleyns with Signet breeding services in 2009, although we had kept Lleyn sheep for twelve years prior to that. In 2010 electronic identification became mandatory, which lowered the cost to start to performance record.

Collecting data and analysing it through Signet gave us the ability to identify the outstanding individual ewes. We then purchased premium recorded Lleyn rams from all over the U.K. as well as using outstanding Signet evaluated home bred tups. Breeding the best with the best, mating after mating, has produced cumulative improvements in performance and genetic makeup breeding some of the best maternal sheep in the U.K. They are certainly the most improved breeding sheep within the whole Lleyn lineage.

As a result of our focused and relentless quest for improved commercial performance we have become the highest average indexed performance recorded flock of Lleyn sheep in the U.K. This rightly justifies the use of the name Performancelleyns. When you select your Lleyn ram/tup, they will be the very highest figured selection of Lleyn rams for sale in the whole country.
