At Innovative Sheep Breeding we have been looking for a new maternal sheep to cross with the best of our Lleyns to create a new breed of composite sheep for some time.
The quickest way to find out is to watch our explainer video
It is the start of a new breed, a combination of the best of British combined with the best from New Zealand.
The criteria for the input of this new maternal breed was one that was performance recorded for a significant period. A hardy and resilient breed with exceptional ease of care attributes. It must have a white face and wool but have no more wool than a Lleyn.
We found it with the New Zealand Tefrom that has only recently come into the UK in tiny quantities.
The Tefrom is a three-way composite that has in time, become stabilised.
It is the combination of the New Zealand Romney for hardiness and thriftiness. The New Zealand Texel for meatiness and parasite resistance and the East Friesian for milkiness and fertility.
Tefroms are quite different from Highlanders, so do not confuse the two or think they are variations on a theme. SIL shows them to be significantly better performing, and they are quite different in breed characteristics.
Innovative Sheep Breeding are using this new combination, the Lleyn and the Tefrom to make substantial leaps in sheep performance and profitability.
It is much like the breeding stratedgy used by Innovis. However, Innovative Sheep Breeding have started at a much better position in terms of performance and practical traits.
If you would like to find out more about our new offering, the maternal ProlleyNZ, you will only have to watch this video for less than a minute and a half.
From this, you will get a good idea if they might be relevant to you and your sheep production system.
We think that they have the potential to substantially improve your flock’s overall commercial performance, through enhanced growth rates and New Zealand influenced practical and maternal attributes.
